I love you guys

Nothing like a good controversial entry to revive a dying blog.

Yeah, I guess I may be over critical at times. But if you all can live with Huiyin, I should be ok bah ( :X oooo, I'm so going to die for this! hahaha!) But, yah I agree that the session wasn't really a complete failure also.

I'm just glad everyone saw something good out of it.

At the end of the day, well, I still love you guys! (yeah and girls also!)

Like I said, stay happy people!

ben & jerry's..

yo yo yo.. din know what title to use so took inspirations from kiathy's title.. anyway i'm a first time blogger so don't mind if it doesn't turn out ok hor..

i must say the session on tuesday did serve a good purpose.. it helped us to get to know the freshies better and also helped the freshies become more comfortable around us and among themselves.. really must thank our mamasan vivien for doing such a great job breaking ice initially.. wouldn't have been so fun if she wasn't there.. not mamasan for nothing manz.. fantastic four must all learn hor..

i guess i have to say the previous few blog entries all made a few points for us to understand the different view points and also learning points.. not trying to facilitate anything here, but everybody learns different things out of the same happenings.. i had different feelings and learnings from reading each of the 3 entries and i'm thankful to them for speaking their minds.. this is what this blog is all about.. for us to share anything and everything with everyone within samba, which i'll like to call family.. yes family coz i see you guys more often then i see my parents and sisters..!! and i'm happy whenever i see you guys (although a bit sad for not seeing my parents more..) i must comment that the sharing has been a bit lukewarm lately.. com'on people do blog whenever you feel like it.. even if it's a one-liner.. and please post all the photos ok..?? wait until neck also long liaoz.. heehee.. i know everyone very busy lar.. that's y got this blog to chill and relax mah.. share jokes also can.. anything also can share ok..??

anyway back to the topic, tuesday was good, so no regrets.. i hope all the points brought up is just for us to understand each other better, coz we can't progress if the understanding is not high enough.. this is what i call "Chemistry" hahaha..

anyway just to sidetrack, i spoke with a few people from other cca, and they agree with me that this batch of freshies is quite different from our batch and senior batch.. don't really know how to translate into english, but the gist is something like they expect more but yet less willing to give (commit).. like they have been too well protected and spoon-fed in the past such that their attitude is like just stay in comfort zone with my friends lar.. alamak my english damn bad lar dunno how to explain.. anyway it's just a general view lar not all freshies are lidat.. our samba freshies should be ok lar.. we can sort them out.. anyway key thing is we have to treat them different lar.. but please dun be too protective lar.. never good to do that.. let them suffer a bit under controlled environment also good.. heehee..

please please please feel free to tell me if i can improve on anything ok..?? i'm a paranoid person, and i'm always looking for ways to improve myself but i need people to tell me so dun worry ok..?? but tell me to improve my looks hor.. very handsome already.. can help it.. =Pp

and also please keep this blog alive ok..?? keep posting and posting hor.. i check everyday and let me tell you.. it's like a miracle if there's a new post.. ok lar maybe i'm just lonely and hanging on to this blog to pass my time.. =)

anyway, let's all tell each other off and then laugh it off later ok..?? kiathy please continue to be emo coz if you stop, it's just not you lar.. yc dun be so politically correct with your mails ok..?? add some human touch to your mails leh.. like shuddup or yeah yeah yeah or wadever lar.. i always feel like reading pap mails.. heard the same thing from N no. of freshies.. =Pp and Z please continue feeding back, although i must say you do sound harsh at times.. i understand you lar so i know you're just being helpful, but still harsh lar.. dun bash me hor.. =Pp

everyone take a deep, deep breath, and start blogging alright..?? =D

okok.. time to stop nagging and start listening to BP lecture..

cheers..!!

PS. yc haven give treat yet leh.. new president must treat everyone by tradition in singapore.. all agree just shoutout in the box..!!

PPS. Z looks totally lost in BP class lar.. and stop flirting with ms yeow in front me..!! arrggghh..

hello!

okay i think my stand on the interaction session is that it's actually a success! i think the whole whole thing was just a platform for interaction, which we lacked for our batch. and honestly, seeing the freshies leaving together for the mrt station/bus stop at the end of the session was rather heartwarming.

so the question is simply, would it have been better to not have such a session? i guess not. if they're scared/turned off by us, none of them would have stayed up to 10 pm just sitting around and trying out instruments AND talking/interacting with each other. the mood was quite good towards the end, and i guess the games was just an extension of the programmes, and if nobody wanted to play then so be it we didn't force anyone to play games!

but anyway i agree we tried too hard for introducing games lah. now u ask me play taboo i also dun wanna play. but i don't think we tried too hard for the whole session? cos if anyone actually made an effort to talk to the juniors, then you'd realise ya it's just a come and talk cock session. just a mature get-together no need to play games thing. so okay NEXT TIME NO MORE GAMES. but kudos to ujin for making the effort to introduce games, cos i mean, they're a part of any gathering but i guess just talking and playing music was a better option.

i personally managed to speak to everyone and try to get names and stuff. in a normal prac it'd have been super weird for any of us to walk up to every single section and talk to everyone so yea i think that it's good to have such a day. i mean for a talkative ass like me it's fine i can talk to most people but for shy kids like abcde if we didn't have such a session then damn difficult to break the ice. like can u imagine any aux girl willingly coming over to talk to a surdo guy er during prac. or vice versa. quite weird right! and so it'd have taken probably weeks for anyone to even dare to talk to anyone. and that's something i wouldn't want i think, considering i only got to talk to some of our aux girls like in december..

as for teaching them stuff and playing, er that day was just for fun wad. no biggie. i don't think we were even trying to TEACH anything. of course during our normal pracs we won't be doing stupid things like trying to teach them 5 songs at a time lah.

OKAY SIGNING OFF.

Ice Breaker Session

First things first, let me clarify the reason for even having the ice-breakers in the first place. After the first session, i received feedback from not just one source, but quite a number of freshmen who mentioned that it was a little scary and intimidating, that they were plunged into learning a piece right away. Some mentioned that there were insufficient icebreakers too, and everyone just played their own instruments without really knowing anyone.

And hence the ice-breaker session on Tuesday. It would have been much easier to just leave things as they were and let practice go on as per normal, but a few of us felt that perhaps beside from just playing music, the freshmen ought to get to know each other and us seniors a little better. Personally, i felt that our batch took way too long to gel together as one, and I was hoping it would happen a little faster with this batch. However, the one risk that we took was that no one knew how the interaction would turn out, as Zway mentioned, every batch might be diff from the other. But it was a risk I was willing to take to avoid pple getting turned off by the "prac after prac and song after song" kinda thing. So 1 prac off to just get to know one another better wasn't going to disrupt stuff i guess. Moreover, we did in fact get to know a few of the freshmen better, and i observed that towards the end, they were a little more comfortable with the seniors and their peers. I wouldn't say that the session had gone to waste - the games were there just to cater for a situation whereby all of them were enthusiastic enough to participate, and well, looks like they weren't! But it's ok, we could always try that another time. Nonetheless, i think they still enjoyed the pizza session, the informal jamming session, and the talk cock session with a few of us at the concourse!

Asking them to volunteer to jointly organise something for everyone during the term break was just a suggestion - I fet that it would have been great if a couple could volunteer, get their batch together and come out with something. It would have given them a hand at being involved in the club, and maybe a sense of ownership from the start. I dun think they would view us a bunch of seniors who don't know what to do. If we were like that, we would have also asked them to do our exchange proposal. The last time the seniors asked our batch for volunteers to do some club writeup, a few of us did volunteer to take up the task. And although no one volunteered there and then, Gerald and David have actually discussed with Jiakai last night and they said they are willing to come out with sthing during the hols. Hopefully, this would act as a platform for them to gather their batch to work together. So we have our first 2 volunteers already!

And yup, this batch is pretty good, I've great faith in their ability and hopefully, they'll be at our level by early next year.

Ice Breaker - After Action Review

Ok, so much so for our little bonding session. I suppose some effort has been put into this but things just didn't turn out the way it should be, judging from the unplayed "taboo" and the fact we had to ask the freshies what they wanted to do.

But ah well, here's my little 5cents worth.

In the words of Ujin (or probably someone else, but I'm pretty sure its Ujin):
"Perhaps we're trying too hard"

I mean its great we're giving them the opportunity to interact and get to know each other during the second week of practice, but to ask them to organize a get-together outing? Isn't it a bit too errr soon for such commitment?

At this rate, we're gonna scare away the freshies faster than we can say "So, who wants to volunteer?" I mean its like only their second session with us and we're showing them that we dunno what to do and they should help us do something about it. Currently, I don't think they're obliged to do anything for us just yet, seriously.

Anyway, we shouldn't assume they would be as enthusiastic as us, even our enthusiasm didn't happen overnight. Took us a lot of effort, sweat, embarrassment and noise making before we're what we are now. Perhaps we should stop testing their commitment and just do what we do best, jam together.

Speaking of jamming together, I think this batch is actually quite good. Maybe we should get them to play together as a group more on Reggae now, since that's the only song they know so far in entirity. Let them get used to playing together and allow them to understand what playing samba is all about, group synergy. Maybe after they know Reggae well enough, then we can start teaching them other songs.

It's a bit pointless to be showing them bits and pieces of all the songs we know, in fact I think it might even overwhelm them and scare them away. Didn't take us just 5 sessions to know all the songs we know now anyway also.

So yeah, we should just do what we do best. I think that's what the freshies want when they joined us in the first place.

oh yeah, upload photos pls! whoever took any today. (Ujin and Yanni dun run :P)

Surdo Skin

Ok Jerry and I went on a dinner date last evening at PS. After our romantic KFC meal, we went back to spotlight to look for the vinyl skins for the surdos. Apparently, the type we were looking for were not simply just called vinyl, but dunno simi zephyr vinyl... or something liddat.

Here's what Spotlight has to offer.

As you can see, other than the cool dark green that we're using now, the vinyl also comes in a whole assortment of gay colors.

So I guess most likely we would be buying the same dark green vinyl then....
